The annual Fall meeting of the Middlebury Union Cemetery Association will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the home of President Colleen Houghtaling, Fox Run Farm, 479 Locey Creek Road in Middlebury Center.

The annual Fall Clean-up will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31at 1 p.m.   All are welcome to help clean off old flowers and grave decorations.  All items you wish to save from you lots must be removed prior to Oct. 3.  The Cemetery is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  At that time work repairing/reseeding graves and general upkeep will also be done.

Check the bulletin board at the front gate for updates to notices, rules, and map details of the Cemetery.

The Board of Directors has also posted burial & planting policies, previously sold lots that are up for resale, clean-up schedules, and contact information on both the web site and the bulletin board in the Cemetery.  Please check often for updates on important information concerning the Cemetery on either the bulletin board or the website.

There is a Donations Box at the Main Entrance of the Middlebury Union Cemetery to help curb the rising cost of general Cemetery maintenance.  President Houghtaling is pleased to announce enough donations have been received to pay for 1 additional mowing this year.  "The donations have been a blessing to us, as this particularly rainy year has prompted us to go over our budget for mowings.  A single mowing costs over $500 and we only have enough money from our interest earnings to pay for 9 mowings a year.  Some people have complained about the high grass this year, which has been an unfortunate side effect of the frequent rains we've encountered, but there's only so much we can do with the limited amount of money we have to spend each year.  Mowings are scheduled strategically throughout the mowing season, which lasts from late April through late Oct or early Nov.  If we mowed every week, even every other week, at the beginning of the season, there would be no money left to pay for mowings beyond late summer.  Having enough donations come in via the Donation Box has enabled us to at least pay for one more much needed mowing."

In addition to mowings, there are other maintenance issues to deal with, as well.  The Board of Directors are committed to making the cemetery as aesthetically pleasing as possible.  As there are many graves more than a century old in portions of our cemetery, we find it necessary to repair or replace headstones and foundations periodically.  If you would like to make a monetary contribution to this worthwhile project, please send check or money order to:

The iron archway near the Main Entrance of the Middlebury Union Cemetery has taken on an unusual appearance thanks to mysterious painters who changed the word UNION from black to blue.  If anyone has any information on our mystery workers, please contact President Houghtaling so they may be properly acknowledged.

Help is also needed in completing our on-line listing of graves.

Footwork in the cemetery is needed.  No computer skills necessary.

An on-going project of the Middlebury Union Cemetery is to record each grave via paper and photo.   If you have a digital camera, you can help photograph graves for archiving purposes.  Or if you would like to write down the information that is still visible on the memorials - particularly old memorials - contact:
